SAL Match 2 – Tilsley Park, 17 May 2014
Radley hosted the second SAL Division 1 fixture of 2014 against the top 2 teams in the league and an extremely strong Basingstoke Team. Many international athletes were on show and the standard of performance in some events unprecedented.
There were many great Radley performances including a host of personal bests. U20 Kathryn Woodcock got 2 pbs in Discus (41.99m) for a win and Shot (9.96m) winning the B string and won female athlete of the match. Another U20 Gina Sunderland also got 2 personal bests to win the 100mH in 15.25 (just outside the ESAA qualifying standard) and in the 200m (26.39). 14 Year old Faith Brew continued her good form with another pb in the 800m (2.18.19), she also ran a very impressive leg of the 4x400m relay.
In the men’s 100m, 6 of the 8 athletes went under 11s including Radley’s David Gain (2nd) in 10.67 and Jordan Dorrian who won the B string in 10.88. Both also got valuable points in the 200m with 2 second places (21.52 and 22.12 respectively). 14-year-old Ryan Craze made his senior debut and clocked a huge pb in the 400m (52.39).
Unfortunately there were just too many gaps in the mens team (with only 10 athletes) to clock up the points needed to win the competition and the competition was just too strong with Basingstoke and Southampton fielding their British League teams. The shock result was that Basingstoke beat Southampton comfortably - this was the first ever time that Southampton had lost a SAL fixture. Radley managed 3rd place beating City of Norwich who were lying in 2nd in the league before the fixture.
