SAL Match 2 – Plymouth, 30 May 2015
Radley AC had an early start and a long trip to Plymouth for their second SAL fixture of the season.
The team was small due to exams, illness and injury but the team spirit was excellent and the athletes rallied around to gain valuable points.
The ladies were the stars of the day with Gina Sunderland gaining a pb and English Schools qualifying standard in the 100mH with 15.2 and followed that by a win in the B string 200m and assisting her team to a win in the 4 x 100m relay. Team mate Tara Kafke in only her 2nd competition in over 2 years due to a serious injury had a fantastic day getting a winning double in the 200m (25.3) and 400m (56.8) and also formed part of the 4 x 100m relay team.
Thrower Aislinn Baird won the hammer and then got a pb in the discus with 32.01m for a second win. She also got good points in shot, javelin and HJ. Her fellow thrower Christina Nick got a treble of wins in A string shot (11.61m) and discus (42.48m) and b string hammer (37.56m) but also gained valuable points in LJ and TJ with some impressive jumps (4.87m and 9.19m). Christina was also female athlete of the match for her impressive discus throw. Becky Hodgson also ran a pb in the 1500m S/C.
The Radley men also had some good performances, with their best event of the day being the men’s LJ. Jordan Dorrian won the A string with 6.79m – gaining Male man of the match for this jump and Moneur Williams the B string with 6.17m and both formed half of a relay team that won by over a second. Fellow relay runners Ryan Craze and Ben Owen also got good points in the sprint events along with Jordan, who also got a seasons best in the HJ (1.70m). Other good points came from the 3K where Paul Jegou timed his kick perfectly to gain second place in 9.34.9 with Alex MIell-Ingram winning the B string with 9.39.5. A big thanks goes to M55 Alistair Duncan who did 5 events for valuable points on the day. The day finished with a very exciting mens 4 x 400m relay which saw 3 teams fighting for places and points in the last few metres – but some unsportsmanlike behaviour saw Radley miss out on their deserved 2nd place.
Overall a fantastic team effort for 3rd place behind home team Plymouth and a strong Newbury team in an extremely close fixture:
- Plymouth 221
- Newbury 178
- Radley 172
- Yeovil 171
