SAL Match 5 – Dartford, 20 Aug 2016

Radley’s senior team travelled to its final SAL match in Dartford on Sat 20 Aug.

Lack of availability of athletes meant the team was only 16 athletes strong (including 6 masters athletes) across both genders and this was therefore always going to be a struggle to fill every event (2 per event) against the top 2 teams in the league. Despite this the athletes there covered as much as they could and rallied around, showing great team spirit to muster as many points as possible. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough and the team came 4th on the day with only 143 points.

Jordan Dorrian, Eima Mead and Matthew Coleman got great points in the sprints, dropping only 1 point across all their sprint events. All 3 also got valuable points in field events as well as making ¾ of the winning relay. They were joined in the relay by Ashley Johnson who also amassed valuable points across the field events and won his favoured 110mH race convincingly with a huge SB to clock 15.0 which was enough to give him man of the match. Emma Haley also did an impressive job for the team winning the 800m and 3K and then competing in the steeple chase and 4 x 4 relay. All other athletes were a huge credit to the team and I’m very thankful to them for their contribution and effort.

As the league was so close this year and as predicted some surprising results occurred in the final match, Radley moved from 6th to 13th in league and into relegation by just 17 event points across the whole season.

This is a disappointing result and  purely due to lack of commitment or availability rather than effort of those that attended the fixtures.

I hope that we can get a greater commitment from athletes next year and move back into the top division where we belong.
