SAL Match 5 – Perivale, 15 Aug 2015
Radley travelled to Perivale for its final SAL fixture of 2015 with just 23 athletes (depleted due to the SEAA U17 championships, holidays, work & family commitment and injuries).
Despite the numbers, the Radley athletes rallied as usual, showing great team spirit and commitment to win the match by a huge margin. Radley 1st with 238, host Club Ealing in 2nd 178.
There were a number of great achievements: U17 Edward Gronbech did 2 events and achieved 2 pbs - 800m 2.12.2 and a 13s improvement in his 3Ks/c for 7.21.7. Training partner U17 Eleanor Backhouse also achieved a massive pb in the 3K knocking a whopping 54s off her previous best to record 12.59.6. Not to be outdone Jess Anstice finally broke the 2.30 barrier in her 800m (2.29.3).
Other notable performances came from:
Kathryn Woodcock who won the discus by 17m (42.18) and the B string Hammer (41.29) and was 2nd in the A string shot (10.24 ) but also did PV (2nd) and 2K s/c (2nd) for valuable points. Her discus got her the female athlete of the match award on the day. Becky Hodgson filled in gaps created on the day by injuries on top of her usual events and ended up covering 200, 400, 800, 2K s/c and both relays an amazing contribution to the team. Chris Shaw also amassed valuable points and a number of season’s bests competing in shot, discus, hammer, javelin, PV and 110H. Adela Hussain, Jordan Dorrian, Gina Sunderland and Moneur Williams also did many events for the team and won or came 2nd in many of them.
There we also a few U17 SAL debutants who also did well: Sam Way won the A string HJ (1.70) and b string LJ (6.19), training partner Blake Strickland-Bennett came 3rd in A string 400H (65.0) and 2nd in PV , Matthew Johnson came 2nd in B string 100m (11.6) and ran both relays.
All in all an amazing day and a credit to the team's athletes, especially as a number of the injured athletes came along to support and help officiate.
This great result helped the team move up one place in the final league table which therefore placed us 2nd in Div 2W – enough for promotion to Div 1 next season.
Final league standings:
- Harrow 20 1113.5
- Radley 17 1028.5
- Woking 17 998
